What Is Memory Care?

Memory care is specialized memory support for those who live with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The Artesian of Ojai features a safe and secure environment where our experienced memory care staff can closely monitor the changing needs of your loved one. Our experienced professionals provide programs, activities, and events designed to help memory care residents improve their cognitive abilities, while enjoying their passions and hobbies.

What Are the Benefits of Memory Care?

Comprehensive memory support services provide numerous benefits. The Artesian of Ojai provides specialized activities, socialization, and supportive services, physical safety in a secure environment, and 24/7 supervision. These services allow your loved one to maintain their independence in a safe, secure environment with activities tailored to their needs and interests.

Memory Care, Assisted Living, or Nursing Homes?

Memory care services provide a higher degree of support for those living with the cognitive limitations that are hallmarks of dementia. The Artesian of Ojai has two homes designated for memory care featuring specialized programming and higher levels of staffing.

How Do I Know If a Loved One Needs Memory Care?

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia are not always obvious, but often family members or close friends will notice that a loved one is forgetting important dates, names, how to get to familiar places, or neglecting to pay bills. These can be signs of dementia, and the individual should be seen by their physician. As the disease progresses and your loved one requires a higher level of care, memory care services may be appropriate.

Is Memory Care Needed During the Early Stages of Dementia?

It is always a difficult decision to move a loved one to memory care. When a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s has been received, transitioning to a memory care community earlier allows for a smoother move. It provides necessary adjustment time, and an opportunity to form relationships and connections with team members, and other residents in their community.

What Levels of Care Are Available?

There are several different types of dementia, and the Artesian of Ojai is equipped to care for residents with most forms. However, if dementia creates difficulties such as aggressive behavior, our community may not have the resources to care for these residents. We commit to working with you to find an alternative location that can address your loved ones’ needs.

How Should You Prepare for a Visit?

When it comes to visiting a loved one in a memory care community, it is important to be flexible. Bringing favorite objects such as scrapbooks and photos are good options for spending time together or you may choose to play a familiar game.  Creating positive interactions that do not cause agitation or discomfort should be the goal.

Does Medicare Pay for Memory Care?

Unfortunately, Medicare does not pay for memory care services in an assisted living community. Medicare A does cover inpatient hospital care or related services, qualified skilled nursing care, or hospice care. Medicare B covers outpatient services like home health care or physical and occupational therapy. It’s important to understand what your Medicare plan covers so you can access services which fit into your budget.
